Sports Day

At Dylan's school Sports Day takes on something of an international flair - the teams are named after a country and the kids are encouraged to 'dress' in something representative of that country. Each team is made up of kids from every grade but what I love most about this event is that the Grade 6s are Leaders. So they come up with a chant and which they teach the younger kids and are responsible for getting them from one activity/station to the next as well as minding all the snacks and water bottles. As parent volunteers, some of us were assigned to a station and others (myself included) were allowed to join a team - as a minder, not participant. Having only one child in the school I did not have the difficult choice of which-of-my-kids-teams-do-I-join and DJ was delighted I was tagging along!

DJ was assigned to Team Japan and while we were doing some research on Japan we discovered how to write his name in Japanese so we incorporated that into his ninja-style headband which I thought was pretty cool!

Hi-ya! Ninja DJ!
His name in English and Japanese separated by The Rising Sun!

They started with 'Tail Tag', then Crazy Run; T-Ball; Water Sponge Relay; Playground; Scooter Relay, Frisbee Throw; Indiana Jones; Javelin Throw (using pool noodles); Tug-O-War; Baseball Throw; Parachute Golf; Rocket Launch and finished with Tire Relay.  15 stations (including  a snack/water break) @ 10 mins at each = a busy morning. I think the kids loved them all but my favourite was the parachute golf - a giant rainbow-colored parachute waving up brightens up any day!
