Back in the Classroom

As most of you know I have spent many years teaching Computer Applications among other things. Well, having had some time off last year, I have decided it is time to go back to work!! For the last few months I have been networking, meeting people, floating a few ideas etc and as a result I have finally started a Coaching practice (I actually have paying clients!) and I have met some wonderful people and made some very useful contacts. Last week, I met with a Business Development Centre and it looks like I'll be facilitating some programs for them in the future; I have been approached by the Alumnae Association at my old school with a view to editing their newsletter.

However, despite giving up the Apps training so I could focus on other things, I seem to have been drawn back to what is familiar. I have been in discussions with a training company in Halifax about contract work for them.

To that end, I found myself sitting in a classroom yesterday, reacquainting myself with the finer aspects of Microsoft Excel. For some reason, I have a notion that the Canadians do things differently, so before I committed to standing up in front of the class, I sat down the back and observed. Excel is the same here as it is in Ireland (no big surprise there) but the day seems leisurely in comparison to the classes I used to teach, no pressure to cram in as much as humanly possible in 7 hours, instead a stroll though 5 lessons with plenty of breaks so people don't get too overworked.

Yes, the pace of life (and work) is slower here than in Dublin and I am sure I can adjust. So next week, I do a Teach-back just so they can be sure I didn't make up all that wonderful stuff on my resume and then it’s back to the classroom! I have to say, I think I do prefer being up top (teaching) than sitting at the back (observing). Some things just can't be left behind! Wish me luck!
