Transatlantic Crossing

Most people wake to the sound of traffic, birds, children, foghorns if you live near the sea, or in our case train whistles - depending on which direction the wind is blowing it can sound like they are about to drive through the front door! But I wonder what sound you wake up to a few thousand miles from land, out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Well, in a few days we may get an answer to that as Susie (my one and only Sister) and my best friend, Julie (yes, the Reverend) will board the Queen Mary 2 on Sunday morning for what is referred to as a Transatlantic Crossing (not a cruise!)

Yes, departing from New York they will spend 5 full days cruising the Atlantic Ocean before arriving at Southampton in the UK on the morning of the seventh day (unlikely to be a day of rest as they are staying overnight in London before flying back to NY the next day).

If you want to see what they might be up to during those 7 nights and 5 full days onboard, click on the link (title) above. I have had a sneak preview and judging by what I have seen and what the Ladies have told me, they won’t be travelling light. Just how many dresses, pairs of gloves, 3” heels and bottles of Vodka can you squeeze into a suitcase? And as they are leaving the menservants behind, how will they get those cases onboard?

And how many of the bars & restaurants will they get to wine & dine in? Will they get to sit at the Captain’s Table? (I have no doubt those two will manage it at least once!) How high up is the 12th deck? And is a coincidence that Susie took swimming lessons before she left?

So many questions to be answered – I think the Ladies should ‘guest’ on the blog. Perhaps, if they can tear themselves away from the Captain’s Table, Champagne Bar, Spa, Casino, Libraries, Shops etc they would answer some of these questions and let us know firsthand just how fabulous an adventure I imagine it is, to travel from the New World (which both Ladies have made their home for many years) to the Old World (where they both spent their youth), without seeing land for days.

I don’t think I would be comfortable to be so far from land for so many days. But Susie & Julie are more adventurous than I and luckier than most of us to have the opportunity to live it up in style. Have a fantastic time and do let us land-lubbers know what it’s like. And come back safe!

BTW The Ladies do have an onboard email address too so if anyone wants to send them a message, email me and I’ll forward the address.

  1. O my God, they'll have a fantastic experience, mind you it might be a good idea to bring BIG CLOTHES for the end of the cruise....why because you will be hugh at the end of the week. I went on a cruise in May it was brilliant but when the week was up I could only fit into one pair of shorts and I still had a second week to go in Spain, I had to starve myself for 2 days to fit into my clothes again.

All those lovely all you can eat breakfasts, morning tea, 3 course lunch, afternoon tea and 5 course evening dinner and not forgetting the cocktails by the pool, wine, beer and anything else you fancy. No wonder I couldn't fit into my clothes!!!!! But it was all worth it, have a blast

  2. As if I wasn't jealous enough! Mind you, I am of the same mind as Carla who says "I’d like to experience it all but just stay tied up at the dock!"
