Chocolate pancakes for breakfast helped ease him into the day, as did the bike that he thought wasn't coming. We hid it in the garage when it was delivered a couple of weeks ago but had been pretending that all deliveries have been delayed because of the COVID-19 situation.
So if you can't invite your friends over for a party, the next best thing is to have an online party. Thank goodness for the internet and video calls apps.
First up was a WhatsApp call with the Irish Aunties and cousins; then a Google Duo call with the Halifax family (Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and cousins) and somewhere in between a Messenger video call with Grandma Patsy (I didn't get a screenshot of that one).
We managed to squeeze in a 30-min bike ride around the hood, hoping to see some of his buddies who could wish him a Happy Birthday. We did see some, just not the ones he wanted to see. But the unexpected candy & cookie drops from neighbours and the long list of comments from friends on Facebook & Insta made up for that. He appreciated them all.
Then back to the most important part of the day - Fortnite & Forza with friends and cousins. A new headset that makes him look like a member of the Nascar pit crew. And a new skin and emotes from his cousin Alya. He was in heaven.
DJ's choice for his birthday dinner was not the usual Sunday roast - he wanted burgers & fries. So I made fancy mayo and added onion rings to the menu, all served in a basket Ponderosa-style. And then cake. Of course we had cake - a Betty Crocker Birthday Bits Cake with homemade icing that was meant to be blue, but I guess I didn't put enough drops in and we got turquoise instead. But it tasted good.
Happy Birthday to all the kids (big and small) that are celebrating birthdays in quarantine. We'll make up for it next year, right?!
