Balancing Act

Having a broken wrist is a nuisance for sure. If you have had the experience you'll know what I mean. Have you ever realised just how much we do with our dominant side? And how differently our non-dominant side works? For starters, it is nowhere near as strong; but I realise the issue is one of leverage. You can make those muscles stronger but when you can't use the second hand to position the brush when sweeping the floor or to get the extra oomph you need, you really are stuck.

Some things are difficult and some are darn near impossible
Most things are doable, with a little patience and some adaptability. Like . . . .

  • Getting dressed - Yay for yoga pants and a bra is optional if you are not going out.
  • Driving - The up side of having an automatic with power steering is that I actually can drive with one hand and one leg.
  • Typing - thank god for my iPad touchscreen.
  • Getting comfortable (on the couch or in bed).
  • As for personal hygiene - Have you ever tried to put deodorant on the left side using your left hand? Why is it so hard to brush your teeth with the wrong hand? Washing my hair is a major chore. I'll stop there, it's a family friendly blog :)

But there are some things that are pretty much impossible . . . .
  • Cutting food with a knife, now I know how DJ feels.
  • Lifting anything.
  • Ironing.
  • Blow drying my hair, so I have resorted to an 80's style shaggy look for a few weeks.

I have learned a lot (about myself) in the last weeks
  1. I don't like feeling helpless because if I can't 'do' stuff I don't know how to define myself.
  2. I used to think I was a patient person. I am not! At least not with myself.
  3. It takes me a week to recover from a trauma (root canal, broken wrist)
  4. I like to dance and DJ thinks its funny.
  5. My hubby can cook! With a bit of direction
  6. I don't have much of a support network (on a practical level). Some people are too busy with their own lives. And some people just don't care :(
  7. Time heals. And time will pass, albeit slowly sometimes. Not much longer and I will be back to get the cast off and fingers crossed it will stay off. In the meantime, I'll keep trying to balance.
