As luck would have it the first Snow Day of the year fell on my day off, so no panic about what to do with DJ at 7am when the school closures were announced. Of course he was delighted that there was no school, little did he know what I had planned . . . . after breakfast we headed down to Sobeys for supplies. If we were going to get snowed in, I wanted to be sure we has enough food & drink to get by. His 'work' for the morning was to help me in the kitchen and what a great little helper he was, peeling and chopping (well he tried before I took away the sharp utensils) potatoes and carrots.
Tuesday is Library day at school, so we had our own Library session, DJ picked a bunch of books from his playroom bookshelf and laid them out the table, explained that we pick 2 each and that we can't read them, we can only look at the pictures. . . because you can't talk in the Library. I managed to persuade him that we were actually at home and we did have a bit of a read.
After another snack, I swear he has hollow legs, (Cappa used to say that to me and I love that DJ laughs at the idea just as I did 40 years ago), we got on our snowsuits and headed out to clear the snow off the deck. The snow today was the light powdery stuff that is easily moved around. Useless for making snowmen or snowballs but if you pile it up in a corner of the deck,
you can make a great pile and jump on it. Sort of like piles of leaves in the Fall, but cleaner!
Checking out the now headless snowman (biology lesson!) and exploring in the woods (nature studies) followed by hot chocolate with apple juice (not my recipe) rounded off what was really a homeschool day.
Best thing about Snow Days? Just hanging out with my Little Darling xo
