Sunday Apr 18th was a wet, really wet one but we had the pleasure of attending a unique show at one of my old haunts, The Waegwoltic Club, or Waeg as it affectionately known as. The show was a performance by a group I would never have imagined assembled in the same room. Put together by Lee Park, (the tiny one in the center of photo), a classically trained violin performer and music producer concentrating on tango, klezmer, classical, and electro-acoustic fusion.
The show itself was one of only two, held on the same day and was described on the promo as "Fusing electronic elements with ancient sounds". Those sounds included violin - courtesy of multiple award winner Lee Park herself and Sean Kemp, violinist and composer who worked on Spirit of the Dance. Piano/keys/synth sounds were by Bill Stevenson and the deep tones of a stand up Bass were brought to us by one of the Professors from my department here at Dalhousie who by night becomes a leading Halifax multiinstrumentalist and arranger. Of course there were drums (percussion) - by Nick Halley, a world/jazz percussion guru. And if that isn't enough of a mix, add in a DJ-turntablist known as DJ YRUSH.
Not done yet - add to that the internationally renowned Eastern Eagle (nominated for Best Aboriginal Recording of the Year and aboriginal youths: Kiptu Youth Drum & Dance Group AND Native Son - poet, musician, story teller and you have one amazing group of entertainers all under one roof.
