Just back from a few days in PEI - Prince Edward Island. First decent trip in the 'Big Dog'. It's not all that far, the 4 hour drive in the G300 was lovely, sunshine, blue skies, real summer weather at last! We checked in to our Hotel (The Rodd Charlottetown) which was in the heart of downtown C'Town - about the size of Wicklow town. The PEI Jazz & Blues Festival was on so there was plenty of people around - even for mid-week.

A bit of history for you - Charlottetown is said to be the birthplace of Canada - In 1864, delegates to the Charlottetown Conference arrived on board the HMCS Queen Victoria. The twenty-three enterprising men, known as The Fathers of Confederation, shared the vision for a great country. The heated political debate and social banter of the Charlottetown Conference gave birth to the country we now know as Canada.

PEI Is also known as
Abegweit - the Mik'maq word meaning
Land cradled on the Waves and is probably best known for Farming, Lighthouses, Lobster Fishing, Golfing & Beaches. With Farming & Tourism being the main industries it is hard to go very far without seeing fields of Green or a little town with restaurants & craft shops.
Our favourite past-times while on vacation include finding good places to eat. We had heard that wouldn't be a problem as C'Town has a large Catering College and I had heard even Fish & Chips are a culinary delight. Well, we did manage to find some really good places to eat - most notable Sim's Corner Steakhouse & Wine Bar. Jonathan says it's the second best steak he has ever had (the best? The steak served at our wedding dinner @ Seven in NYC!)
There is quite a big Irish/Scottish influence on the Island too, you can see it in the masses of potato fields; the bars (Brennan's, The Olde Dublin Pub, St James' Gate, Claddagh Oyster House); shops; place names and bag-pipes ;) You can guess where most Islanders can trace their roots to.
As the Island is not that big - 275km tip-to-tip , we managed to see quite a bit of it - from the car - the weather wasn't great and rained nearly every day but it is a very pretty, scenic spot and one we will return to - when the sun shines so we can see the beaches! Check out the photos at the link above.
Next stop - Cape Breton - there is so much to see in this vast country, why would you want to go South?
